MOBILE, Ala. (April 9, 2008) – Pre-commissioning unit (PCU) Independence (LCS 2) held the ships first re-enlistment on board April 9.

Chief Boatswains Mate (SW) Charles Gatewood, Independences’ First Lieutenant, was the first Sailor to re-enlist on board LCS 2. The ship is currently under construction at Austal Shipyards in Mobile, Ala.

“It’s an honor to be the first Sailor to reenlist on the newest ship in the United States Navy,” Gatewood says. “It’s one more step forward towards commissioning and eventually sailing away on board Independence.”

Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Payseur, LCS 2’s Chief Engineer, administered the oath of enlistment to Gatewood. This was Gatewood’s third re-enlistment.

The Independence is scheduled to launch April 26 in Mobile. The ship is the first trimaran hull being built by General Dynamics. LCS 2 has four core competency crews of 40 Sailors that each will perform the job of a 300 personnel crew.

LCS 2 is currently under construction and delivery to the Navy is expected in Dec. Independence will be homeported in San Diego, Calif.
