Exercise Koa Kai is a semiannual exercise in the waters around Hawaii designed to prepare independent deployers in multiple warfare areas and provide training in a multi-ship environment. This Koa Kai marks the first time San Diego-based ships, the guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) and the guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48), participated in this exercise.
