SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Vice Adm. Tom Rowden, commander of Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) announced the 2017 Sailor of the Year (SOY) and Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) for the CNSP staff during a Tree Lighting ceremony Nov. 29.
Logistics Specialist 1st Class (SW) Vanessa J. Alvarez, was named CNSP SOY for 2017.
"I feel honored being nominated with all the outstanding and experienced First Classes at CNSP," Alvarez said. “I would like to thank my direct leadership for the support and opportunities they’ve allowed, and all of my mentors near and far for believing in me and pushing me to achieve anything I set my mind to.”
Alvarez will go on to compete against other shore duty SOYs from across the Pacific surface force to determine who will represent CNSP in the U.S. Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year competition.
Legalman 2nd Class (SW/AW) Sidney R. Williams, was named CNSP JSOY 2017.
“It is truly a humbling and rewarding feeling to be selected as the Junior Sailor of the Year for COMNAVSURFPAC,” Williams said. “I would like to thank my chain of command for always believing in me and ensuring that I always strive to be the best. Last but not least, I would like to thank my beautiful wife for always being there for me through thick and thin.”
In a congratulatory note to the CNSP staff, Captain Brendan R. McLane, CNSP Chief of Staff, elaborated on what it means to be selected for Sailor of the Year.
“Our Selectees’ boundless hard work and devotion serve as a testament to the value they provide the staff each and every day as we all work to take care of the center of our universe – the Sailors and ships in the Surface Force,” McLane wrote.
