Lieutenant Matt Hollinger enlisted in the Navy in June 1990, after two years of Data Systems Technician training his first duty assignment was Patrol Wing One Detachment Kadena in Okinawa Japan as a maintenance technician. In 1995 he transferred to USS Nimitz CVN-68 homeported in Bremerton, WA where he completed a FIFTHFLT deployment in support of the Iraqi no fly zone. After two years he returned to PatWing One Det Kadena as the maintenance Leading Petty Officer. During his tour he earned an Associates of Arts degree from the University of Maryland and was subsequently selected to the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1999 and attended the University of Minnesota from 2000-2002.
LT Hollinger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and was commissioned in Aug 2002. His first assignment was as the Main Propulsion and Auxiliaries Officer in USS John S. McCain DDG-56 in Yokosuka Japan 2003 to 2005. During his tour he completed several engineering assessments, two dry docks, and two Seventh Fleet Deployments.
Upon completion of Aegis training in Dahlgren, VA he reported to USS Shoup DDG-86 as the Fire Control Officer from 2005-2007. During this tour he completed a Seventh Fleet Deployment. He also completed an Individual Augment tour as an Electronic Warfare Officer assigned to Camp Hit in Al Anbar Province, Iraq from Oct 2006-Sep 2007 ensuring the safety of the Soldiers and Marines in his assigned AO received the best protection against RCIED’s. Upon return to SHOUP he was assigned the duties as Assistant Combat Systems Officer.
Following his sea duty assignments he reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA where he earned a Master’s of Arts degree in Security Studies with a focus on the Middle East.
Upon completion of Department Head school Lieutenant Hollinger reported to USS Carney DDG-64 as the Operations Officer from 2010-2011. He reported to the ship while she was deployed to FIFTHFLT and after a challenging SRA, Basic Training and Intermediate training phases he deployed to FIFTHFLT in support of Standing NATO Maritime Group One Operation Ocean Shield in support of Counter-Piracy in the Gulf of Oman and Somali Basin.
His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation medal, Army Commendation medal and five Navy Achievement Medals.
