LUMUT NAVAL BASE, Malaysia - USS Avenger (MCM 1) arrived at the Lumut naval base in Malaysia May 16, 2011 for a port call where Avenger Sailors are taking part in community service activities and building relationships with the Malaysian navy.
More than 20 Avenger Sailors will be participating in community service activities at the Rumah Wawasan orphanage to spend time with local children and do some restoration work on the orphanage.
The captain of USS Avenger, Lt. Cmdr. Patrick L. German, also visited the chief of staff for the Royal Malaysian navy fleet headquarters, Rear Adm. Sulaiman Bin Mohamad, upon arrival.
"We are very excited to see the great work Americans are going to do for the community in Lumut," said Rear Adm. Mohamad. "The first ship I commanded was a minesweeper, so I am very happy to see an American minesweeper visiting us in Lumut."
Mineman Seaman Jonathan Cedeno, a Sailor aboard Avenger, said he was excited to see the sights and sounds of Lumut and was hoping to have the opportunity to participate in community service activities.
"I can't wait to get out there, see everything and help the community," said Cedeno. "Only in the Navy would I have the opportunity to go to a place like this. In my whole lifetime, I probably never would have had the chance, but thanks to the Navy, here I am."
