Command Master Chief Johannes J. Gonzalez was raised in Panama, Republic of Panama. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and realized his dream of joining the United States military at the age of 24. He attended basic training at Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, IL, in March 1995. After graduating basic training, he attended Gas Turbine "Electrical" A school where he was an honor graduate. Master Chief Gonzalez also graduated with honors from the Career Counselor course and the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 142, Khaki). He is also a graduate of the Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat Course (Class 83).
His first duty assignment was on board USS KIDD (DDG 993). Other duty assignments include USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75), USS VINCENNES (CG 49), NCTAMS PAC, USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70), and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Japan. Gonzalez was selected during his tour at Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Japan into the Command Senior Chief program and reported onboard USS REUBEN JAMES
(FFG 57) in January 2011.
His personal awards include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), as well as numerous campaign and unit awards
