A native of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Commander Miller was commissioned in June 1991 at the University of Minnesota having received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering under the Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Corps program.
Commander Miller served as Executive Officer onboard USS INGRAHAM (FFG 61) in Everett, Washington from May 2005 – Jan 2007. His sea tours also included Assistant Surface Operations Officer on Commander Carrier Strike Group EIGHT / Commander GEORGE WASHINGTON Strike Group staff, Operations Officer in USS THORN (DD 988), N3 for Commander Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-EIGHT, Fire Control Officer in the commissioning crew of USS COLE, and Electronic Warfare Officer and ASW Officer in USS O’BANNON (DD 987).
Commander Miller’s shore assignments include Current Operations Officer on the staff of Commander Naval Surfaces Forces, Atlantic, and Navy Staff (OPNAV), where he was promoted to his current rank of Commander in June 2007. While assigned to OPNAV, Commander Miller served as Aide to Director Navy Staff, Vice Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, and Deputy Executive Assistant to Deputy CNO for Integration of Capabilities and Resources (N8), Vice Admiral Barry McCullough.
In August 2008 Commander Miller was selected to attend the National War College (NWC) at National Defense University in Washington D.C. He graduated from NWC in June 2009 receiving a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy and having completed his Joint Professional Military Education (JPME II).
Commander David Miller’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (three awards).
