Captain David Bretz

Captain David Bretz is a native of Villa Grove, Illinois. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering. Captain Bretz took command of Destroyer Squadron THREE ONE in December, 2016.

Captain Bretz’s division officer tours were in USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and USS Thorn (DD 988). Following his Department Head tour as Engineering Officer in USS Mahan (DDG 72), he served as Commanding Officer of USS Whirlwind (PC 11). He served as Executive Officer in USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) and Commanding Officer in USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109).

Ashore, Captain Bretz earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also graduated from the Naval War College with a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. He served on the OPNAV staff as the Congressional Liaison for the Director of Surface Warfare (OPNAV N86) and on the Secretary of the Navy Staff as Director, White House Liaison Office. Most recently he served in the Joint Planning Support Element of Joint Enabling Capabilities Command.

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Two awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Three awards).
