Commander Stuart Mattfield
Commander Mattfield is a native of Minnesota and enlisted in the U.S. Navy into the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) School. Upon graduation in 1989, he accepted an NROTC scholarship to attend the University of Minnesota, and was commissioned in June 1993. After a tour at Naval Special Warfare Center, San Diego, CA, he commenced flight training in April 1995 and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in March 1996.
Upon completion of initial flight and electronic warfare training, Commander Mattfield reported aboard Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE, for his initial tour with the World Watchers, in Whidbey Island, WA, where he served as Avionics Branch Officer and Tactics Officer. During his tour, he made multiple deployments to the Western Pacific and to South West Asia.
In September 1998, he reported to CTG 72.5, in Misawa, Japan, serving as the Tactics Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. In September 2000, Commander Mattfield reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, earning a Master of Science Degree in Information Technology Management, as well as a diploma from the Naval War College Command and Staff program.
In October 2002, Commander Mattfield reported aboard the USS THEODORE ROSSEVELT for duty as an Aviation Launch and Recovery Equipment Officer (Shooter) and Hangar Bay Division Officer (V3) Officer. He deployed for the initial strike operations during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
In August 2004, Commander Mattfield reported aboard Special Projects Patrol Squadron TWO (VPU-2) based at MCBH Kaneohe Bay, HI and served as Training Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, and Maintenance Officer.
Beginning June 2006, Commander Mattfield served at Commander, Pacific Fleet Headquarters, as the Fleet Reconnaissance Officer for Current Operations, responsible for all airborne and surface Fleet Special Reconnaissance missions in support of National, Theater, and Pacific Fleet tasking.
In August 2009, Commander Mattfield reported to the Naval War College in Newport, RI, earning a Master of Art in National Security and Strategic Studies.
In January 2011, he reported aboard TACRON TWO TWO as the Executive Officer. He deployed onboard USS BATAAN with Det TWO in March 2011, to support Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR off of the coast of Libya. During this time he briefly served as the Chief Staff Officer, Amphibious Squadron SIX.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Medals (Strike/Flight), the Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various other personal and unit citations. He has earned an additional Master of Divinity degree in Theology and Apologetics from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary.
