Air Traffic Control Senior Chief Hopkins is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina. He enlisted in the Navy in August 1995 and attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. Following completion of recruit training he reported to Air Traffic Control “A” School in Millington Tennessee and then onto Naval Air Station Patuxent River Maryland. During his tour he was advanced to Air Traffic Controller Second Class. In May 1999, he reported to the USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA-3) in Sasebo Japan where he was assigned Leading Petty Officer (LPO). In June 2002 he crossed decked to the USS ESSEX (LHD-2). During his tour he was forward deployed and out to sea over 200 days each year and was qualified as Amphibious Air Traffic Control Watch Officer. In May 2002, he reported to Naval Aviation Technical Training Center Pensacola, Florida. He was assigned as an Amphibious Air Traffic Control “C” School instructor and was advanced to Air Traffic Controller First Class.
In February 2005 he reported to the USS SAIPAN (LHA-2) in Norfolk, Virginia. He was assigned as LPO and requalified as Amphibious Air Traffic Control Watch Officer. In April 2007 the USS SAIPAN was decommissioned. In May 2007, he reported to Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility Virginia Capes, Virginia Beach Virginia. Shortly after checking in he volunteered for an Individual Augmentee (IA) assignment at Al Asad Air Base Iraq. After returning from a six month tour in Iraq he was advanced to Air Traffic Control Chief. In May 2010, he volunteered for a Global Support Assignment (GSA) and was assigned as Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of a detainment facility in Iraq for a year. For his service he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. In June 2011, he reported to Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia where he was assigned as Operations Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer.
In July 2012 he reported to the Master Jet Base, Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach Virginia. He was assigned as the Tower Chief and then the Training Chief.
In April 2016, he reported to Tactical Air Control Squadron Two-One and was soon advanced to Senior Chief. He deployed with the USS IWO JIMA (LHD-7) to provide relief to Haiti during Joint Task Force Mathew. Senior Chief Hopkins is qualified as Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist and is certified as a Master Training Specialist. His personal awards include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards) and numerous campaign medals and ribbons.
