We would like to introduce ourselves as your Ombudsman. As many of you probably know Ombudsman are the link between the command and the Navy family. This is especially true in deploying commands, where the Ombudsman is the primary point of contact between the families at home and the command during deployment. Ombudsmen are also an important resource during natural disasters or evacuations. As a spouse it is important to become acquainted with your Ombudsman. The Ombudsman is not a counselor or a social worker, but can assist Navy family members in finding solutions by helping them get the necessary assistance. As the USS TORTUGA, Ombudsmen we are committed to providing our family members with information and assistance.
As your Command Family Ombudsman, we fulfill the following roles:
- Serve as the primary link/liaison between Tortuga families and the command.
- Serve as the primary communicator of information between the command and command families.
- Communicate regularly with families via e-mail, the Tortuga Web page and monthly newsletters.
- Provide information and outreach to command family members.
- Interact and cooperate with organizations and military offices.
- Assist with the Tortuga command sponsorship program to help aid in a smooth transition of new families arriving onboard.
- Act as an advocate for family members, utilizing knowledge of the command to help access the appropriate resource within the chain of command.

What is an Ombudsman?
Every Command has an Ombudsman who is a spouse of a sailor at the Command. The Ombudsman serves as the liaison between the command and the families. How can an Ombudsman help me?
Navy Family Ombudsmen are key resources for family members, particularly during deployments. Ombudsmen maintain current resource files with information on military and civilian community agencies that can help families solve a variety of problems, and successfully meet the challenges they face before, during, and after deployments. In addition to providing referral information, Ombudsmen can facilitate communication between the Command and family members. Ombudsmen may publish or contribute to command newsletters or maintain care lines, which have recorded messages with information for command families that can be accessed 24 hours a day. Ombudsmen can also assist families in contacting the Command for a variety of reasons.
What is an IA assignment or tour?
An IA is an Individual Augmentee. A Sailor may receive orders to go IA and this means that he or she will deploy as an Individual, not with their command. Sometimes an IA will deploy and be stationed with another branch of the Military. http://www.ia.navy.mil
