CMDCM(SW/AW) Michael J. Mashburn
Command Master Chief
CMDCM(SW/AW) Michael J. Mashburn is a native of Spokane Wash., and graduated from McCloud High School class of ’88. He entered the Navy in October 1990 and attended recruit training at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla.
Following recruit training, Master Chief Mashburn reported to his first sea duty assignment USS Sterett (CG 31), forward deployed to Subic Bay, Philippines. During this tour he was advanced to Boiler Technician Third Class. Following Homeport change to Naval Station San Diego, he was detailed to HT “A” school in Philadelphia Pa., followed by HT “C” School in San Diego Calif. Upon completion of “C” School, Master Chief Mashburn reported to USS Thatch (FFG 53), forward deployed to Yokosuka Japan, as a Hull Technician Second Class.
His follow-on shore assignment was to Trident Refit Facility, Bangor, Wash., in 1995 where he was assigned to Code 310 as a ship fitter. In early 1996 he was assigned to the Master-at-Arms (MA) office and was approved for conversion to Master-at-Arms.
Master Chief Mashburn reported in September 1999 to Lackland AFB, San Antonio Tx., for MA “A” School and negotiated follow on Orders to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). He reported onboard in December 1999. While onboard he was advanced to Petty Officer First Class. An opportunity presented itself and Master Chief Mashburn volunteered for temporary duty to USS Princeton (CG 59) for the 2001 Vinson Strike Group deployment. While deployed on September 11, 2001, the date of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Vinson Strike Group was redirected to the coast of Afghanistan to spearhead Operation Enduring Freedom.
His next assignment was to USS Ingraham (FFG 61) where he served as Chief Master-at-Arms. During this tour he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 2003. Upon completion of this tour, he reported to Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest. During this tour he was selected for individual augmentee (IA) to Forward Operating Base, Shield, to Law and Order Taskforce, Multi-National Forces Iraq, where he served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor. He was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2007.
Upon completion of his IA, he accepted orders to USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). While attached to Roosevelt he was selected for Master Chief in 2010. His next assignment was to USS Nimitz (CVN 68). This tour was highlighted with his selection for Command Master Chief in 2012. As Command Master Chief he accepted orders to Navy Recruiting District Denver, which encompassed Six States and over 330,000 square miles.
Master Chief Mashburn is currently serving as the Command Master Chief for USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19).
Master Chief Mashburn is a graduate of both the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy class ’139 and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course, class 12140, Newport, R.I. His personal awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (eight awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
