Welcome Aboard and congratulations on your orders to USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3), the best amphibious assault ship in the Fleet. KEARSARGE is the third of the WASP-Class multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ships. Our mission is to embark, deploy, land and support a Marine Landing Force. The ship was specifically designed to accommodate Air Cushion Landing Craft (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and AV-8B Harrier aircraft to provide close-in air support for the assault force. KEARSARGE can also carry up to 26 Navy/USMC helicopters for troop movement, air support, and Search-And-Rescue movements.
Your assignment in KEARSARGE will be challenging, rewarding and fun. In addition to being one of the finest ships in the fleet, our warfare programs are in full swing! Many of our Sailors earn both Air and Surface Warfare qualification pins during their tour. The crew and I look forward to showing you how and why we pride ourselves in being the best.
Now that you have your orders, we want to be sure you are assigned a sponsor. KEARSARGE's sponsor program is alive and well, but requires some initiative by both of us. If you have e-mail, you can expedite this process. To request a sponsor, please send an e-mail to the following address:
When we receive your request, we will assign an experienced KEARSARGE Sailor to assist you, from the department and division you will be working in. That person will be able to answer any questions you may have concerning life aboard the ship, the ship's schedule (unclassified portions), and what you may want to consider prior to checking aboard. Your sponsor will also assist you with getting to the ship.
If you were not able to get in contact with a sponsor via email, you can always call the ship directly. The phone number to the Administrative Office is (757) 445-6035.
Again, congratulations on your orders to KEARSARGE. We look forward to your arrival. USS KEARSARGE - Proud, Trustworthy, Bold!
