SURFOR Web
SURFOR Web is a knowledge management system comprising of Microsoft Office 2000 or 2003 on the desktop, and Microsoft SharePoint server programs. The server programs used are Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS.) Most SURFOR Web content is stored in "sites" using the Windows SharePoint Services. The Portal software ties it all together with an entry point for all the sites and by providing search capabilities across all the sites. Microsoft Office programs are started and run from your workstation as usual, and interaction with the server can be through the Office applications or a web browser. The main entry point into the SURFOR web via web browser is https://www.surfor.navy.mil.
MOSS enables enterprises to develop an intelligent portal that seamlessly connects users, teams and knowledge so that people can take advantage of relevant information across business processes to help them work more efficiently. SharePoint Server provides an enterprise business solution that integrates information from various systems into one solution through single sign-on and enterprise application integration capabilities.
The portal facilitates end-to-end collaboration by enabling aggregation, organization, and search capabilities for people, teams, and information.
Users can find relevant information quickly through customization and personalization of portal content and layout, as well as by audience targeting.
Organizations can target information, applications and updates to Audiences based on their organizational role, team membership, interest, security group, or any other membership criteria that can be defined.
Access to SURFOR Web is controlled through a user name and password. Account registration is located at https://apps.surfor.navy.mil/privreg. It also a 128-bit encryption for Secure Socket Layer (SSL) capable web browser and PKI enabled. Adobe Acrobat reader is also required for viewing some of the files.
