Once commissioned on April 6, Arlington will be the Navy's eighth amphibious transport dock ship in the San Antonio class. Named for Arlington County, Va., where American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, killing 184 people, Arlington is one of three ships named in honor of the heroes and victims of Sept. 11, 2001.
Arlington's keel was laid down on 26 May 2008, at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Builder's Trials of the ship started on 21 August 2012. These were completed on 30 August 2012.
She completed Navy acceptance sea trials on 2 November 2012. The U.S. Navy formally accepted the ship on 7 December 2012.
Mrs. Joyce Rumsfeld, wife of former United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, is the ship's sponsor.
