Commander Thomas was born in Atlanta, Georgia and enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1983 assigned to the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). He went ashore in 1986 to Strike Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX located at Naval Air Station, Cecil Field as the Leading Yeoman and FA-18 Computer Simulator Display Operator.
In 1992, Commander Thomas attended Officer Candidate School and commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer and reported to USS MONTEREY (CG 61) as the First Lieutenant and later, the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. In May 1996, he reported to USS SPRUANCE (DD 963), where he served as Ship's Navigator and Administrative Officer.
His department head tours were aboard USS DOYLE (FFG 39) as Combat Systems Officer and Senior Watch Officer and Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-TWO as Combat Systems Officer and served as the Tomahawk Launch Area Coordinator for USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) Carrier Strike Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then served as the Joint Command Center Senior Watch Officer for United States Southern Command in Miami, FL until 2006.
CDR Thomas reported to USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG 58) in August 2006 as the Executive Officer and deployed to the Caribbean Sea and participated in Counter-Narcotics Terrorism Operations. In August 2008, he reported to USS VICKSBURG (CG 69) as the Executive Officer and deployed to the Northern Arabian Gulf as the Air Defense Commander for the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group. His most recent assignment was Commander Task Force FOURTY-THREE for Commander, U.S. Fourth Fleet.
Commander Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Southern Illinois University in 1992, and a Master's Degree in Business and Human Resources from Webster Universtiy in 1998.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various unit and service awards.
