CMDCM(SW/AW) Mark A. McDonald
Command Master Chief
Master Chief McDonald was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1988 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 01 March 1989. He attended boot camp and Seaman Apprentice Training at RTC/NTC San Diego, California.
His first tour of duty was USS SCOTT (DDG-995) in Norfolk, Virginia as a deck Seaman and Signalman Third Class where he served in OPERATION DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM during 2 deployments to the Mediterranean and Red Seas.
His second tour of duty was NAS/NSA Memphis in Millington, Tennessee as a member of the Security Department where he converted from SM2 to MA2. USS NASSAU (LHA-4) in Norfolk, Virginia where he was advanced to MA1 and served in various operations, conflicts and humanitarian aid during 3 deployments.
He then reported to Instructor Duty at the Master-at-Arms “A” school in San Antonio, Texas in 2001 where he was initiated as a Chief Petty Officer and earned his Master Training Specialist qualification. During his tour as an Instructor, 9/11 brought many challenges to include a total change in curriculum and an increase in student throughput changing the Navy’s MA Force from approximately 2,000 to 10,000 strong.
His third shipboard duty assignment was the USS LEYTE GULF (CG-55) as CMAA and Weapons Department LCPO where he was advanced to Senior Chief and completed 2 more deployments in support of OPERATIONS ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. Next he served on COMNAVAIRLANT Staff as Force Master-at-Arms.
He then reported to NSA Bahrain as the Naval Security Force Operations LCPO responsible for 350 Master-at-Arms and was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer. USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) as the CMAA where he completed 1 Westpac and was selected for the Command Master Chief program. His first tour as a CMC was VAW-117 and reported to USS BULKELEY DDG-84 in January 2012 as the Command Master Chief.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards) and various other campaign and unit awards. His career highlights include earning his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist and his Master Training Specialist qualifications. He attended the Senior Enlisted Academy class 129, Gold group and the CMC/COB course, Class 73, in Newport, Rhode Island.
