Commander Benjamin J. Abbott
Commander Abbott is a native of Milford, Delaware, and a 2001 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. His sea tours include a tour of duty in USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37), where he served as Damage Control Assistant and completed a Counter Narcotics deployment to the South Pacific. His next tour was in USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95), where he served as the commissioning Navigator. Commander Abbott’s first Department Head tour was in USS MCFAUL (DDG 74), where he served as Operations Officer and deployed to the CENTCOM AOR with the DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER Strike Group. His second Department Head tour was also as Operations Officer, making the maiden BMD deployment of USS VELLA GULF (CG 72).
Commander Abbott’s post-Division Officer shore tour was at the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Science in Operations Research and completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I. After his Department Head tours, Commander Abbott reported to Assessments Division of the OPNAV staff (N81) as Integrated Air and Missile Defense Section Head, where he was responsible for the management of studies and compilation of assessments in support of programmatic decisions for naval capabilities. Following his assignment to the Pentagon, Commander Abbott served as N3 for Afloat Training Group, Norfolk, where he was responsible for the scheduling and oversight of all basic phase events for ships home ported in Norfolk, as well as Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Europe and Bahrain. He is currently serving as Executive Officer in WINSTON S. CHURHILL (DDG 81).
Commander Abbott’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (2), and the Navy Achievement Medal (2), as well as various unit awards.
