Commander Tom Van Scoten
Commander Van Scoten enlisted in the Navy as an Electronics Technician. He received his commission via the Seaman to Admiral Program and was designated a Surface Warfare Officer following Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. His Division Officer tours were in USS PENSACOLA (LSD-38) and USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) as Electronics Material Officer and Fire Control Officer. His Department Head tours were in USS HUE CITY (CG-66) as Weapons and Combat Systems Officer.
Ashore, Commander Van Scoten graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Additionally, he attended the Naval War College and completed a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and JPME Phase I. Following the Naval War College, he reported to the Pentagon as Deputy Executive Assistant to the Director, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Capabilities Division and as Action Officer for Unmanned Surface and Underwater Vehicles, SURTASS ships and Shipboard Network Integrations on the OPNAV N2/N6 staff. Commander Van Scoten also served as Cruiser/Destroyer Modernization Section Head within OPNAV N96 responsible for upgrades to combat systems and hull, mechanical and electrical systems. Commander Van Scoten’s previous assignment was Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center Fort Carson, Colorado.
