Commander Joe Matison was commissioned in 1997 from the United States Naval Academy. He is also a 2008 graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Afloat he served his Division Officer tours as CICO and then Electrical Officer on USS McInerney (FFG 8) and as Navigator on USS Ramage (DDG 61). Following these two tours he was assigned to Assault Craft Unit ONE as LCM Department Head. As a Department Head he served as Chief Engineer on USS Nicholas (FFG 47) and as Chief Engineer on USS Antietam (CG 54).

Upon completion of his Department Head tours, Commander Matison served overseas in Afghanistan and he also served on the staff of Military Sealift Command Headquarters in Washington, DC. After completing the PXO/PCO pipeline Commander Matison reported to USS MAHAN (DDG-72) as part of the XO/CO Fleet Up program and completed a tour as Executive Officer before taking Command.
