Commander de Castro
Commander de Castro was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1996, earning a Bachelors of Science Degree in English.
His at sea tours include Division Officer assignments as Communications Officer in USS RAMAGE (DDG 61) and Auxiliaries Officer in USS PETERSON (DD 969). In December 2003, CDR de Castro reported to USS MAHAN (DDG 72) and served a thirty-six month tour as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer. While in MAHAN he deployed two times to the Mediterranean and Black Seas in support of NATO’s Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean (SNFM) and Commander Sixth Fleet.
In July of 2001 CDR de Castro entered the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. While assigned to NPS, he obtained a Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs. CDR de Castro’s additional tours ashore include his assignment as Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defense (CBRND) Action Officer and Requirements Officer within the Surface Warfare Division on the staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (N86). He also served on the Joint Staff as Branch Chief for Battle Management Aids at the Joint Integrated Air and Missile Defense Organization (JIAMDO). While serving on the Joint Staff CDR de Castro served as the US Representative to NATO’s Air Defense Committee Panel on Air Defense (PAD), where he helped develop policy for Missile Defense for the European Phased Adaptive Approach.
In 2007, CDR de Castro individually augmented the US Army’s First Division (Big Red One) as part of an Embedded Training Team. He deployed for one year to Darulaman, Afghanistan where he served at the Afghanistan Counter Insurgency Training Academy. He then served as Executive Officer onboard USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68) and assumed command on April 17, 2013.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (2); Navy Commendation Medal (4); Army Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
