Commander Peter Halvorsen
Cmdr. Peter Halvorsen earned his commission from the United States Naval Academy in 1998, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
His initial sea duty assignment was in USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), homeported in Norfolk, Virginia where he served as Combat Information Center Officer, Damage Control Assistant, and Navigator. As a department head, Halvorsen served as the Operations Officer in USS O’Kane (DDG 77), homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and as the Operations Officer for Destroyer Squadron 26 embarked aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.
Ashore, as a junior officer Halvorsen volunteered for Individual Augmentation and served as a Policy Planner on the staff of Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan. As a post-Department Head, he served as the Speechwriter and Personal Aide to the Secretary of the Navy, as a Navy Congressional Fellow attached to the staff of Senator Susan Collins of Maine, and as the Operations Officer, fleeting up to become Deputy Director, Fleet Training, at the Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island.
Halvorsen holds Master's Degrees in History, from Oxford University and in National Security Studies, from the Naval War College, where he was selected as the Honor Graduate for his class. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Joint Achievement Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal.
