Commander Fitzpatrick is a native of Sequim, WA. He graduated from Sequim High School, enlisting in the US Navy in 1987 as an Electronic Warfare Technician.

As an Electronic Warfare Technician, he served at sea in USS GRIDLEY (CG 21), Fleet Tactical Deception Group Pacific, and USNS KILAUEA (T-AE 26). He deployed in support of OPERATIONS EARNEST WILL and DESERT STORM during this period. In 1989 he qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist while in GRIDLEY. He selected into the enlisted commissioning program while at Fleet Tactical Deception Group, Pacific, graduated Oregon State University Cum Laude in 1996, and was commissioned.

Commander Fitzpatrick’s first assignment was as a Plankowner in USS MAHAN (DDG-72) where he served as Electrical, Auxiliaries, Anti-Submarine Warfare, and Combat Information Center Officer. He qualified as Engineering Officer of the Watch and Surface Warfare Officer. He selected for the Early Roller Program and began Department Head School in July 2000 after deploying in MAHAN on her maiden Mediterranean deployment.

In January 2002, CDR Fitzpatrick reported to USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL (DDG-81) where he served as Operations Officer until November 2003, deploying in support of combat operations and Tomahawk strikes for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Subsequently, he reported as Operations and Plans Officer on the staff at Destroyer Squadron TWO where he served until August 2005, deploying to European Command Area of Responsibility supporting coalition operations.

Shore assignments include Flag Aide to Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command; US Marine Corps Command and Staff College; Joint Forces Staff College; and Joint Warfare Analysis Center. In 2009, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. He holds a master at arts degree in Military Studies and qualified as a Joint Service Officer in 2011.

Commander Fitzpatrick assumed the duties as Executive Officer of USS STOUT (DDG-55) in August 2012 and deployed on a European Command Ballistic Missile Defense deployment in August 2013.

Commander Fitzpatrick's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy achievement Medal (three awards), Good Conduct Medal (two awards), and various other unit and campaign awards.
