CDR Moninger Commanding Officer

CDR Tom Moninger is from Williamsburg, Virginia and earned his commission and a Bachelor of Science in History from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994. In his first assignment, he served in USS MITSCHER (DDG 57), completed nuclear power training and then served in USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). His subsequent sea tours were in USS THORN (DD 988) as Combat Systems Officer; USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) as Main Propulsion Assistant; and USS PRINCETON (CG 59) as Executive Officer. CDR Moninger assumed command of USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) while deployed to the 6th Fleet in April 2012.
Ashore, Commander Moninger earned a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Maryland. He later served as the Executive Officer of Naval Air Forces Atlantic's Surface Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team. After completing his joint professional military education and earning a Master of Arts in international relations from the Naval War College, he served in the J5/Iraq Divison of the Joint Staff.
A Joint Qualified Officer, Commander Moninger's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation (five awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) in addition to various unit citations and campaign awards.
