A native of Durham, North Carolina, Commander Flaherty graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. She later earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Memphis.

As a Junior Officer, she served in various leadership positions aboard USS VELLA GULF (CG 72), USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69), and USS CARR (FFG 52). Commander Flaherty served a Department Head tour as Combat Systems Officer and a Principal Assistant tour as Reactor Electrical Assistant. She reported to USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) in May 2012 as Executive Officer and assumed command of ARLEIGH BURKE in November 2013.

Ashore, Commander Flaherty served as General Officer Program Manager at Commander, Navy Recruiting Command. She served on the Navy Staff as the Surface Nuclear (SWO(N)) Program Manager and the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) Diversity Lead in N133. She also served as a Program and Budget Analyst on the Joint Staff (J-8).

Commander Flaherty’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) in addition to various unit citations and campaign awards.
