Captain Lewis, a native of Chesapeake, Virginia, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1981.
Awarded a Navy ROTC scholarship, he graduated from Norfolk State University in December 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Technology. In November 1990 he graduated from Surface Warfare Division Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island and reported to USS MISSISSIPPI (CGN 40) as OT Division Officer in January 1991.
While on MISSISSIPPI he deployed to the Red Sea in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Other sea assignments include First Lieutenant in USS PORTLAND (LSD 37), First Lieutenant in USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3), Executive Officer in USS JUNEAU (LPD 10), Operations Officer in USS SIAPAN (LHA 2), Commanding Officer of USS TORTUGA (LSD 46), N3 on the staff of Expeditionary Strike Group II, and N3 on Expeditionary Strike Group V forward deployed in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Shore duty assignments include Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California; Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia; United States Southern Command, Miami, Florida (UNITAS Exercise Chief); Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia (Ship Readiness and Maintenance Deputy); and Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk, Virginia, (Surface Warfare Test Directorate).
Captain Lewis has earned Master's degrees in Mechcanical Engineering (1996 Naval Postgraduate School); Military Studies (2001 Marine Corps University); Executive Masters in Business Administration (2012 Naval Postgraduate School). Captain Lewis is also a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College (2002) and is a qualified Joint Specialty Officer. Additionally, he holds Additional Qualification Designators in Mechanical Naval Engineering, Foreign Area Officer Southern Hemisphere, DoD Resource Management, DoD Acquisition Level II in Test and Evaluation Engineering, and DoD Acquisition Level I in Program Management and is a qualified Department of Defense Acquisition Professional Community leader.
In May of 2012 Captain Lewis reported to Commander Amphibious Squadron SIX as the Deputy Commodore. Most recently, on 3 December 2014 he assumed the duties of Commander, Amphibious Squadron SIX.
