CAPT Weatherly, a native of Farmland, Indiana, enlisted in the Navy in August of 1980 and was promoted through the ranks to SCPO prior to being commissioned through the Enlisted Commissioning Program at Old Dominion University in 1992.

Following completion of the Nuclear Propulsion training pipeline and the Surface Warfare Division Officer’s course, CAPT Weatherly was assigned to USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) as the Electrical Division Officer. His next assignment was as the Communications Officer onboard USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD 41) where he completed a UNITAS and West African Training Cruise.

CAPT Weatherly then attended the Naval Postgraduate School Undersea Warfare curriculum, where he earned his Master of Science degree in Engineering Acoustics.

CAPT Weatherly returned to USS ENTERPRISE as the Reactor Controls Assistant and was aboard during ENTERPRISE’s participation in the first stages of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. He then reported to USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3) where he served as the CIC Officer and Operations Officer while KEARSARGE served as flagship for commander Amphibious Task force East in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.


Following his Department Head tours, CAPT Weatherly attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia.

CAPT Weatherly returned to sea duty as Executive Officer of USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) where he completed a surge deployment to the Horn of Africa area of operations as well as a deployment to the Arabian Gulf as part of the BATAAN Expeditionary Strike Group.

CAPT Weatherly then served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Surface Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team in Norfolk, Virginia where he supervised the assessment of nuclear powered aircraft carriers assigned to the Atlantic fleet. CAPT Weatherly served as Commanding Officer of USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD 41) where he oversaw the completion of the ship’s mid-life extension and return to at sea operations. Following this tour, he returned to the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) this time as the Reactor Officer. 

Prior to his assignment to COMPHIBRON FOUR, CAPT Weatherly served as the N3 officer in charge of current operations at Expeditionary Strike Group TWO (ESG 2).  CAPT Weatherly’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), the Navy/Marine Corps commendation Medal (seven awards), the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and numerous unit and expeditionary awards and ribbons.
