AMPHIBIOUS DOCK LANDING SHIP, WHIDBEY ISLAND CLASS
Designed to support amphibious operations including landings via Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), conventional landing craft and helicopters, onto hostile shores, this ship has a beam of 84 feet, a length of 609 feet and is 16,194 metric tons of raw amphibious fury. Armed with two 25mm MK 38 Machine Guns; two 20mm Phalanx close in weapon systems (CIWS) mounts, six .50 cal. machine gun mounts and two Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) mounts. Designed specifically to operate landing craft air cushion (LCAC) vessels, the well deck has the largest capacity for these landing craft (up to four) of any U.S. Navy amphibious platform. With a crew of 22 officers, 391 enlisted personnel and an embarked Marine Detachment of 402 with 102 personnel for surge operations, this ship can transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles with their crews and embarked personnel in amphibious assault operations; it can provide docking and repair services for LCACs and other conventional landing craft.
