OSCS (SW/EXW) Derek Newell
Senior Enlisted Advisor
Senior Chief Derek Newell is a native of Pittsburgh, Pa and enlisted in the Navy in August 1988. He attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois. After completion of Basic Training, he attended Operations Specialist “A” school where he graduated in February of 1988 and received orders to the USS John L Hall (FFG-32), Stationed at Naval station May port, Florida. He has completed Anti-Submarine Tactical Air Controller “C” school, Journeyman Instructor Training, Recruit Division Commander School and the Senior Enlisted Academy.
Senior chief Newell’s sea duty tours include serving in Operations Department aboard USS John L Hall (FFG-32); USS Leyte Gulf (CD-55); Commander, Carrier Group Six, Operations Departmental LCPO aboard USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG-58) and Commander, Joint Task Force, Horn of Africa as the J5 Senior Enlisted Leader. Senior Chief Newell is currently serving as N3 Leading Chief Petty Officer and senior Enlisted Leader for Amphibious Squadron FOUR currently embarked aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD-3).
Ashore Senior Chief Newell has served at Commander, Space Command, Detachment Echo in Woomera, Australia. He was assigned to Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois as a Recruit Division Commander. He later served as the senior Enlisted Advisor at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Senior Chief Newell is authorized to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and Military Outstanding Volunteer service Medal. He graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy in December 2004. He has earned his Master of Science Degree from Duquesne University in Organizational Leadership and Business Ethics.
