Captain Michael F. Ott is a native of Richmond, Virginia where he attended Benedictine High School. He graduated and was commissioned from United States Naval Academy, has a Masters of Science in Information Technology from the Naval Post Graduate School and a Masters of Arts in Defense Studies from Kings College, London England.

Afloat Captain Ott has commanded Assault Craft Unit FOUR, Maritime Preposition Ships Squadron ONE, Assault Craft Unit TWO, Beachmaster Unit TWO, USS SHAMAL (PC 13) and USS TYPHOON (PC 5). He has served as Chief Staff Officer of Amphibious Squadron FOUR embarked on USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3) and USS WASP (LHD 1) and was Executive Officer of USS TRENTON (LPD 14). Additionally he has served at sea aboard the USS LA MOURE COUNTY (LST 1194) and USS WHIPPLE (FF 1062).

Ashore Captain Ott was Assistant Chief of Staff/Surface Director for Operational Test and Evaluation Force (OPTEVFOR), Information Management Director for Allied Command Transformation and Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Operations for Amphibious Group TWO. He was most recently assigned as Director Trials for the President, Board of Inspection and Survey.

Captain Ott's awards include the Legion of Merit (with two gold stars), Meritorious Service Medal (three gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two gold stars), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star), and various unit, campaign and service medals.
