Master Chief Bates is a native of New Orleans, LA. He joined the Navy on February 8, 1995 and attended boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL. He graduated from Data Systems Technician “A” School Great Lakes, IL in December of 1996 and served as a Data Systems Technician and Fire Controlman from 1995-2011.

In February of 2011 he was selected for the Command Senior Chief/Master Chief Program and was rated a Command Master Chief in May of 2011.

Master Chief Bates reported to USS VICKSBURG as Command Master Chief on March 11, 2013.

Prior to VICKSBURG, his Fleet assignments included USS SPRUANCE (DD 963) as Combat Electronics Division Leading Petty Officer, Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) as Weapons Deck Leading Petty Officer, USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68) as Weapons Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, Afloat Training Group (ATG) Mayport as Surface Combat Systems Department Leading Chief Petty Officer, and USS UNDERWOOD (FFG 36) as Command Master Chief.

Master Chief Bates is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy, Command Master Chief Course, and has earned an Associate’s Degree in Science/Technical studies from Excelsior College, Albany, NY. Additionally, he has earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Afloat Training Specialist qualifications.

His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards), Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), Military Outstanding Voluntary Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
