You have received orders to USS MONTEREY (CG 61), a TICONDEROGA class cruiser assigned to Commander, Carrier Strike Group Two. MONTEREY is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Hampton Roads is a vast area consisting of several cities, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, and Suffolk. The climate is generally mild, though temperatures can be extreme during the winter and summer months. The region is ethnically and economically diverse and offers a wide variety of recreational, educational and professional opportunities.

Reporting Aboard: After you receive orders, your sponsor will send a Welcome Aboard Package with important information about the ship and Naval Station Norfolk. Additionally, your sponsor will provide any assistance necessary to make your transition smooth.

Checking In: If you check in when MONTEREY is pierside at Naval Station Norfolk, contact the ship at (757) 644-6020 to find out at which pier the ship is berthed. If you arrive when the ship is underway, check in at the Naval Station Transient Personnel Unit (TPU), Building J-50. The phone number for TPU is (757) 444-1640. Depending on MONTEREY’s schedule, you will either remain on shore until we return or be flown out to join the ship at sea.

Household Goods: If you are entitled to movement of dependents and household goods, the government will fund a move to Norfolk, Virginia, or because the assignment is designated by SECNAV as an arduous sea duty assignment, to a location you designate in the continental United States. Flying In?: If you arrive via Norfolk International Airport and need transportation to the ship, visit the USO at the airport for instructions. Transportation from the airport will be provided by the ship.

Property Rentals: Monthly property rentals in the area range from $300 for one-bedroom efficiencies to $2,000 for single detached homes. The average two-bedroom apartment goes for $650 to $850. Commute Times: Commute times to Naval Station Norfolk vary greatly from different cities and depend heavily upon traffic flow over local highways and through tunnels and bridges in the area. Plan on spending 15 to 45 minutes in your car for the drive to and from work, or more if there is an accident or road construction.

The Area: Hampton Roads is approximately 90 minutes from Richmond, VA., and three hours from Washington, D.C. Interstate 64 (which transits the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel) is the primary thoroughfare through Hampton Roads. Several other highways intersect the area. Naval Station Norfolk is located at the end of Interstate 564. Virginia Beach, a popular tourist destination, is at the eastern end of Route 44/Interstate 264. Downtown Norfolk, also home to several local attractions including the Waterside District, Nauticus Museum, Harbor Park and Scope, is located off Interstate 264.
