A native of Sacred Heart, MN, Captain Sunvold graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992, earning a Bachelor of Science in General Science.
At sea, he served on the commissioning crew of USS VELLA GULF (CG 72), homeported in Norfolk, VA, as the Assistant Combat Information Center Officer and Auxiliaries Officer; as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer onboard USS DECATUR (DDG 73), homeported in San Diego, CA; and as Executive Officer onboard USS CHOSIN (CG 65), homeported in Pearl Harbor, HI, and USS JAMES E. WILLIAMS (DDG 95) and USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96), both homeported in Norfolk, VA.  He commanded BAINBRIDGE from April 2010 to November 2011.  During this tour, the ship completed a seven-month counter-piracy deployment to FIFTH Fleet in support of NATO Operation OCEAN SHIELD and received the 2011 Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy, Battle Effectiveness, and Retention Excellence awards.  Next, he served as Chief Staff Officer from December 2011 to February 2012, and then as Commander, Patrol Coastal Squadron ONE until July 2013, transitioning the Squadron from shore duty in Little Creek, VA, to overseas sea duty forward deployed in Manama, Bahrain.
Ashore, he served as a Junior Officer Detailer in the Surface Officer Distribution Division (PERS-41) at the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN, and at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Casteau, Belgium, as an Action Officer in the Operations and Exercises Branch of the J6 Division.  His last assignment was as Intelligence Support Chief and, subsequently, Deputy Commander, Joint Planning Support Element (JPSE), Joint Enabling Capabilities Command (JECC), United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), in Norfolk, VA, from August 2014 to October 2016.
In 1999, he received a Master of Science in Space Systems Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, during which he also served as an Associate Fellow on the Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Studies Group XVII.  He completed the Naval War College non-resident seminar course, earning a College of Naval Command and Staff diploma and Joint Professional Military Education Phase I.  In 2014, he received a Master of Science in Joint Campaign Planning and Strategy from the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University in Norfolk, VA, as well as Joint Professional Military Education Phase II.
His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), as well as various unit, campaign, and service awards.
