Captain Derek M. Lavan
Captain Derek M. Lavan is a native of Massachusetts. He graduated from Tufts University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and from the Naval Post-Graduate School in 1997 with a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs.
Captain Lavan has served on numerous ships and afloat staffs to include tours as Auxiliaries Officer, Damage Control Assistant, Electrical Officer, and Navigator in USS BAINBRIDGE (CGN 25) where he was also a plankowner for the ship’s deactivation; Weapons Officer and Operations Officer in USS LABOON (DDG 58); Reactor Mechanical Assistant in USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) which included the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom; on the staff of Commander, SEVENTH Fleet, embarked in USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) as the Future Operations Surface Warfare Officer and TLAM Officer; Executive Officer in USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS (FFG 58); Commanding Officer of USS JOHN L HALL (FFG 32); and as Reactor Officer in USS GEORGE H W BUSH (CVN 77) to include the ship’s maiden deployment.
Ashore Captain Lavan has served as the Deputy Force Nuclear Propulsion Officer on the staff of Commander, Naval Air Forces / Naval Air Force Pacific, and as the Chief of Maritime Operations and Engagement Officer to U.S. Southern Command at the U.S. Transportation Command’s Joint Enabling Capabilities Command.
CAPT Lavan’s military awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various other unit and campaign awards.
