Captain Brian Fort
Captain Brian Fort is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas and a 1989 graduate of the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Following commissioning through Officer Candidate School, he completed nuclear power training at Orlando, Florida and Ballston Spa, New York.
At sea, Captain Fort served in the Norfolk-based nuclear cruiser USS BAINBRIDGE (CGN 25) as the Machinery Two Division Officer and Reactor Training Assistant, completing a Mediterranean Sea deployment and a Standing Naval Forces Atlantic deployment as the NATO flagship during Operation SHARPGUARD. Following Department Head School, he served as Operations Officer in the Pearl Harbor-based USS INGERSOLL (DD 990) and USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70), with deployments to the Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf on each ship. Returning to the East Coast, he served in USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) as Main Propulsion Assistant during the first mid-life complex refueling overhaul of a NIMITZ class nuclear aircraft carrier. In the wake of 9/11, he returned to Hawaii, serving as Executive Officer in USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73), deploying with the STENNIS Carrier Strike Group to conduct combat operations in the North Arabian Sea as part of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Captain Fort served as Commanding Officer of the Norfolk-based destroyer USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66) from February 2008 to August 2009, completing a Mediterranean Sea deployment as Air Defense Commander for the Standing NATO Maritime Group Two in 2008.
Ashore, Captain Fort served as the U.S. Naval and Exchange Officer to the Royal Navy at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England following his Division Officer tour. Following his Executive Officer tour afloat, he served as Executive Officer of the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit, Charleston, South Carolina and then as the Navy Federal Executive Fellow at the George Washington University Elliot School of International Affairs where he studied maritime terrorism and taught security policy as part of a Capstone Graduate Program. Prior to command of GONZALEZ he served on the Joint Staff, J-7, as the Adaptive Planning Branch Chief in the Joint Operational War Plans Division. During his Joint Staff tour, he completed Joint Professional Military Education and earned a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College through the College of Distance Education. He commanded the Nuclear Power Training Unit Ballston Spa from February 2010 to October 2012.
Captain Fort assumed duties as Deputy Commodore, Destroyer Squadron TWO SIX in June 2013. He is authorized to wear the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various other unit, joint, and campaign awards.
