Captain Stephen J. Coughlin 

Captain Coughlin is a native of Levittown, New York, and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. 

Coughlin’s assignments at sea include Electrical Officer in USS Hermitage (LSD 34), First Lieutenant, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Auxiliaries Officer in USS Miller (FF 1091), Engineer Officer in USS Simpson (FFG 56), Propulsion Plant Examiner for the Atlantic Fleet Propulsion Examining Board, Material Officer on the staff of Cruiser-Destroyer Group EIGHT, Executive Officer in USS Carney (DDG 64), Commanding Officer in USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) and Commander, Patrol Coastal Squadron ONE. He is currently serving as Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWO.

Ashore, Coughlin served at the United Stated Naval Academy as Director, Division of Professional Development and on the Joint Staff, Washington, as Executive Assistant to the Vice Chairman and in the NATO Policy Division of the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5).

Coughlin holds a Master of Science degree in Business from the Naval Postgraduate School’s College of Systems Management and a Master of Art degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the United States Naval War College.  He is also a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

Coughlin’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
