Commander Shannon L. Wiens
Executive Officer

A native of Chesapeake, VA, CDR Shannon L. Wiens was commissioned through the NROTC program at Old Dominion University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology.   

CDR Wiens’ initial sea assignment as a division officer was aboard USS BATAAN (LHD-5).  There she served as a Deck Division Officer and was selected to remain onboard for a subsequent division officer tour as the Combat Systems Division Officer.  During her tour, BATAAN deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.  Upon completion of Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in February 2006, CDR Wiens reported to USS ASHLAND (LSD-48) where she served as the Operations Officer.  During her tour, ASHLAND deployed to the Horn of Africa to conduct anti-piracy operations.  CDR Wiens then reported to USS WASP (LHD-1) as the First Lieutenant and deployed to Fifth and Sixth Fleet AOR’s for surge deployments and SOUTHCOM AOR to conduct Counter Narcotics Operations in support of Operation BLUE STORM.  In March 2013, CDR Wiens reported to Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWELVE as the Flag Secretary and was embarked aboard the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71).   

Ashore, CDR Wiens graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School with a Master of Science Degree in Systems Engineering and Analysis and earned the Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I credit.  CDR Wiens was assigned to the Joint Staff, J7 Joint and Coalition Warfighting as a Joint Doctrine Development Officer from January 2010 to February 2013.  CDR Wiens was also assigned at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWARSYSCEN) Atlantic as the 4.0 Military Deputy.  She is also a graduate of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), earning her JPME Phase II certification.  CDR Wiens is currently serving as the Executive Officer at Beachmaster Unit TWO.   

CDR Wiens’ decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various other unit awards.
