Commander Tony DeFrias
Commander DeFrias is a native of Westport, Massachusetts and received a NROTC scholarship via the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program. He graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 1993 and was commissioned an Ensign.
His initial sea assignment was on USS FAHRION (FFG 22) where he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer. His second division officer assignment was ASSAULT CRAFT UNIT TWO where he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Arabian Gulf. CDR DeFrias then completed department head training and served as Operations Officer on USS LASSEN (DDG 82). He then reported to Gaeta, Italy and established Commander Destroyer Squadron SIX ZERO (CDS 60).
DeFrias served as Executive Officer in USS SIMPSON (FFG-56) where he deployed to the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific conducting a counter narcotics-terrorism deployment. Following his XO tour, he served in Afghanistan as the Parwan Provincial Police Mentor Team and the 201st Corps, Second Brigade, Fifth Kandak Embedded Training Team Leader.
His shore assignments include the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Millington, TN, where he served as a placement officer and division officer detailer, Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island as an instructor and Executive Director of the Maritime Warfare Department. Commander DeFrias most recently graduated from the Naval War College and received a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
He reported to Beachmaster Unit TWO in October 2011 as Executive Officer and assumed command in April 2013.
His personal awards include the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal, along with various meritorious unit and campaign ribbons.
