Captain Christopher J. Landis
Before assuming command of Assault Craft Unit FOUR in January of 2014, Captain Landis served on the Joint Chief of Staff in Washington Dc from September 2010 through November 2013. He served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans for Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE from November 2008 through June 2010. The ESG3 staff completed a Middle East deployment and stood up CTF 151, the initial CENTCOM counter-piracy task force and dealt with issues ranging from maritime defense to disaster relief as CTF 58 and CTF 59. Captain Landis commanded Assault Craft Unit ONE from November 2006 through October 2008, where he oversaw 31 deployments of 26 landing craft and 250 personnel in over 1,000 underway operations in support of operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP, CONTINUING PROMISE and countless exercises. Additionally, he completed two deployments for Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) operations including a humanitarian mission in Guatemala.
Previous sea duty assignments include: Executive Officer aboard USS AUSTIN (LPD 4), Battle Watch Captain and Plans and Policy Officer for Commander, Second Fleet and NATO’s Commander, Striking Fleet Atlantic embarked in USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20), Operations Officer aboard USS DULUTH (LPD 6) and USS ASHLAND (LSD 48), Assistant Weapons Officer aboard USS RAMAGE (DDG 61), and Boilers Officer and Navigator aboard USS ANCHORAGE (LSD 36).
Ashore, Captain Landis served as the Surface Operations Officer for Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Commander, 5th Fleet in Manama, Bahrain, and as an analyst at the Navy’s Operational Test and Evaluation Force.
Born into a military family, he grew up in various cities in the United States and overseas before his family settled in Oklahoma. Captain Landis graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1989 with a degree in Journalism and was commissioned through the university’s NROTC program.
Captain Landis has a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and he is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College.
He is authorized to wear the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Joint Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various campaign, service and unit medals and ribbons.
