Commander Mario T. Freeman

Commander Freeman, a native of McCormick, SC, enlisted in the United States Navy in November of 1988.  He was accepted into the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1997 and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (distinguished graduate) at Old Dominion University.  He was commissioned as an Ensign in December of 1999.

Assignments at sea included three enlisted tours onboard USS VULCAN (AR 5), USS IWO JIMA (LPH 2), and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65).  Officer assignments at sea included USS NICHOLSON (DD 982) as First Lieutenant; USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) as Reactor Propulsion Officer; Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group TWO (forward deployed Flag Staff) as Maintenance and Materials Officer, Staff Plans Officer for Contingency Operations, and Liaison Officer for Commander, Task Force 158 (Royal British Navy); USS SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) as Combat Systems Officer; and USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) as Reactor Electrical Assistant.
Ashore assignments included Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic as Deputy Commander’s Action Group (CAG); Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic as Port Engineer/Maintenance Coordinator for USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69); and most recently Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic as Deputy ACOS for Warfighting Requirements and Assessments (N8).
He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Sixth Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Fifth Award), Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous other unit and campaign awards.  He is a two-time recipient of the Modern Day Technology Leaders Award (2007, 2010), two-time Navy League Award winner, recipient of the “Distinguished Graduate” and “Top Gunner” Awards (Surface Warfare Officer Course), and the Hugo A. Owens African American Outstanding Scholar Award.  He completed a Master of Science Degree in Engineering Management at Old Dominion University in 2007.  
CDR Freeman reported to Assault Craft Unit TWO as the Executive Officer in March 2017.
