Command Master Chief Markwell graduated from high school in May 1978 and joined the Navy in December 1984. After completing basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois he attended Hull Maintenance Technician “A” school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His first assignment was SIMA, Norfolk, Virginia where he attained the rank of Second Class Petty Officer. Master Chief Markwell’s next duty station was aboard the USS ORION (AS-18) homeported in LaMaddelena, Italy, after first completing welding “C” school in Portsmouth, VA.

Following his tour of duty in Italy he was assigned to the USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63), homeported at the time in Philadelphia, PA, later changing homeports to San Diego, CA. While onboard the Kitty Hawk he qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare and advanced to HT1.

His next duty station was Trident Refit Facility (TRF) Bangor, WA, where shortly after arriving he was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer in 1993.

Master Chief Markwell then took orders to the USS FRANK CABLE (AS-40), homeported in Charleston, NC but changing homeports to Guam shortly after arrival. He qualified Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) onboard the CABLE.

His follow on duty station was USS LASALLE (AGF-3), the SIXTH Fleet flag ship in Gaeta, Italy, where he worked as the docking officer for a major overhaul. Master Chief Markwell then selected orders to Naval Submarine Support Facility (NSSF) New London, CT for his next duty station where he attained the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. In Connecticut he served as the R-6 production officer and senior ship superintendent.

Master Chief Markwell then went back to the USS FRANK CABLE (AS-40) in Guam for a short tour in Repair Department R-1 Division.

His next assignment was USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71) homeported in Norfolk, VA, serving in Engineering department Repair division where he attained his Enlisted Air Warfare qualification.

His follow on tour was to USS EMORY S. LAND (AS-39), homeported in LaMaddelena, Italy, changing homeports to Bremerton, WA for an extended yard period for MSC conversion and ultimate homeport change to Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).

Additionally, Master Chief Markwell is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Command Master Chief and Chief of the Boat Course (Class 87) and the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 157 Gold). His first CMC tour was with VFA-102 Diamondbacks in Atsugi, Japan, deploying with USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).

Master Chief Markwell is currently assigned as the CMC to Assault Craft Unit TWO in Virginia Beach, VA.

His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
