Commander Thomas A. Mays
Commander Thomas A. Mays is a 1994 graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, with a degree in Applied Physics. He enlisted as a Nuclear Electricians Mate in 1995 and received his commission as a Surface Warfare Officer from Officer Candidate School in November 1996.
Sea duty assignments include a Division Officer tour in USS STETHEM (DDG 63) serving as the Auxiliaries Officer followed by an early roll to Department Head in USS LASSEN (DDG 82) serving as Engineering Officer/Chief Engineer at the rank of LTJG. Later Department Head tours include Commander, Destroyer Squadron 26 serving as Materiel Officer (N4), and USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) serving as Navigator and Staff Navigator for Amphibious Squadron 3. CDR Mays has served in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, the Mediterranean Sea, and has deployed three times to the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Oman.
CDR Mays’s shore tours include Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, earning a Master of Science degree in Applied Physics, Combat Systems Specialty. His thesis, “Low Voltage Electrolytic Capacitor Pulse Forming Inductive Network for Electric Weapons” included the construction of an alternative power supply for directed energy weapons and railguns. He additionally completed Joint Professional Military Education (JPME I) while in Monterey. CDR Mays also served ashore as an Engineering Instructor and Master Training Specialist at the Surface Warfare Officer’s School Command, Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island, as Range Safety Officer and Range Operations Officer at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, and as Battle Watch Captain at US Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.
CDR Mays reported to Assault Craft Unit TWO as the Executive Officer in February 2016.
