USS Toledo CO Provides Guidance to Students Sending Care Packages
MYSTIC, Conn. -- The commanding officer of USS Toledo (SSN 769) visited Mystic Middle School to offer advice on mailing care packages to deployed service members from Connecticut Oct. 31.
Cmdr. Sam Geiger, commanding officer, Toledo, visited the middle school partly on the behest of his daughter, who serves on the student council. His daughter and the council are gathering candy donations collected on Halloween for deployed service members from the state.
"Actually, my daughter asked me to speak to the students about sending care packages because of my experiences serving in overseas assignments in the past," said Geiger. "Receiving care packages from home always had a positive morale booster for the deployed servicemembers."
The Mystic Middle School Student Council was also interested in sending other care packages as the holiday season approaches.
"I'm very proud of our student council for supporting deployed service members from Connecticut. They've really taken the initiative to become more involved in our local as well as extended community. The MMS student council is looking forward to future collaborative efforts," said Nora Selinger, guidance counselor, Mystic Middle School.
With the holidays fast approaching, the United States Postal Service Website list the military mailing deadlines. The Postal Service advises the last day to mail care packages by parcel post is Nov. 12, which is the lowest rate to overseas military destinations. Visit the United States Postal Service Website to view all other recommended mailing dates.
Prior to assuming command of USS Toledo on July 15, Geiger previously served as the operations officer for Commander, Task Force 69. From September 2006 to October 2008, he served as executive officer of USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705).
The submarine was commissioned Feb. 24, 1995 and is the third U.S. warship named for the northwestern Ohio city.
