USS Newport News Crew Recognized for Superior Performance

NORFOLK,Va. (NNS) -- The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750) was named a recipient of the annual Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Award for the calendar year 2011 announced in NAVADMIN 279/12 released Sept. 16.

Along with the Newport News, USS Hampton (SSN 767) also received the award for its extraordinary level of combat readiness and excellence in every submarine mission and core competency throughout 2011.

The Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Award is presented annually by the chief of naval operations to one ship in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and one in the U.S. Pacific Fleet for their superior performance in intra-type battle efficiency. Selection of the award reflects professionalism and dedication of this command.

"I am honored that our crew has been recognized with such a prestigious and historically rich fleet award. I have never served with a team that shows a stronger mission dedication, and I am truly privileged to lead them," said Cmdr. Jasper Hartsfield, commanding officer, USS Newport News.

Hartsfield added that receiving this accolade is largely due to the caliber of Sailors and officers assigned to Newport News.

"Some of their best ideas come from smart, empowered first-tour Sailors and officers. I believe the spirit of this award clearly shows in how our people operate, maintain, and covet the national treasure we are each entrusted with - our proud and capable ship, USS Newport News," said Hartsfield.

Newport News was heavily relied upon during her mid-2011 deployment, delivering eleven percent more mission time to the Operational Command than originally envisioned with a near-perfect mission goal accomplishment.

"Their norm has been to consistently innovate ways, despite odds or constraints, to safely manage risk and overwhelmingly succeed at difficult tasks, even when afforded very little preparation time," said Hartsfield.

The Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund was established in 1917 by the Tribune Association.

USS Newport News is the 39th of 62 Los Angeles-class attack submarines. She was commissioned June 3, 1989 and is homeported in Norfolk.
