Cmdr. Eric Mason, a native of Baltimore, MD, enlisted in the Navy to attend the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program in 1991.  He graduated from Hampton University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, and was commissioned through NROTC Hampton Roads.

Following graduation, he completed nuclear power training and the Submarine Officer Basic Course prior to assignment aboard USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723), where he served in various division officer positions.  While onboard, the ship completed a Depot Modernization Period at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine and deployments to the Caribbean and North Atlantic. 

In October 2000, he reported to Commander Task Force 144 in Norfolk, Va. where he served as the Command and Control Officer.  After graduating from the Submarine Officer Advanced Course, he reported as Weapons Officer aboard the USS Norfolk (SSN 714).  During his tour, Norfolk completed an Extended Refueling Overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, various crew and ship certifications, and a surge deployment to the Mediterranean in support of the NATO Response Force.  Mason reported in October 2005 to Joint Inter-Agency Task Force South in Key West, Fla., where he was assigned as the Eastern Pacific Action Officer. In August 2007, he reported to Commander, Submarine Force in Norfolk, to serve as the Submarine Force Diversity Officer.

Following completion of the Submarine Command Course, Mason served as Executive Officer aboard USS San Francisco (SSN 711) from October 2008 to May 2010.  During his tour, San Francisco completed an Extended Dry-docking Selected Restricted Availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, various crew and ship certifications, and a homeport shift to San Diego, Calif.

Commander Mason attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Penn., where he completed his Joint Military Education, earning a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies. His most recent assignment was Deputy Director for Current Operations at Commander, Fleet Forces Command staff.

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
