Commander, Submarine Group Two

Sub Group Two Commander Visits High School NJROTC Program

NEW LONDON, Conn. Commander, Submarine Group Two, Rear Adm. Paul J. Bushong, participated in the annual inspection and Pass and Review for New London High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Nov. 18.

During the event, the unit's Color Guard, Weapons and Non-Weapons drill teams exhibited their skills before parents, school and community officials and Bushong.

"I thought you guys looked great. I appreciate the hard work getting your uniforms ready and looking and being sharp," Bushong told the more than 90 cadets. "I also congratulate each of you for being part of NJROTC. I think it is important. The things you learn in this program - the discipline, working together as a team, physical conditioning and more - set you up for success in life."

Bushong also told the cadets that two of his three daughters participated in NJROTC.

Having Bushong as the guest inspector for the event was a "big deal," according to Lt. Cmdr. Erik Snodgrass, a senior at the high school and the unit’s student commanding officer. Snodgrass, who recently was awarded a ROTC scholarship, led a cadet-run presentation about the unit for Bushong. Later, the unit's student leadership had lunch with Bushong.

Retired Cmdr. Ted Ward, the NJROTC’s Senior Naval Science Instructor, helped established the unit at the high school during the 2002-03 school year. Recently, the group was named distinguished unit for 2009. Retired Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Brian H. Smith serves as the unit’s Naval Science Instructor.
