Commander, Submarine Group Two

COMSUBGRU 2 Sailor, Pennsylvania Native, to Participate in 'Runner of Steel' Marathon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (NNS) -- A Commander Submarine Group 2 Sailor is seeking to earn the title "runner of steel" when he returns to his home state, to participate in the Pittsburgh Marathon, May 6.

Lt. Cmdr. Jason Deichler, a nuclear power officer assigned to the command's material and readiness department, will lace up his running shoes to participate in his first marathon.

"The course for the Pittsburgh Marathon will take the runners through all of the major cultural centers where I grew up around," said Deichler. "If nothing else it will be fun to watch these places go by as I run the 26.2 miles."

Deichler, an avid runner, has been preparing for this marathon by running an average of 20 to 40 miles a week.

An estimated 25,000 runners are expected to participate. Deichler has also participated in a series of road races for the past several years and is hoping he will receive a decent run time to qualify for the 2013 Boston Marathon.

"I'm hoping to run the Pittsburgh Marathon in less than three hours and ten minutes," said Deichler.

Deichler won't be alone; his immediate and extended family members will be cheering him along. He will also have company for at least a portion of the marathon, when he is joined by his oldest sister, who will run in the half marathon.

"My sister and I will begin together on the same start line," said Deichler. "Pittsburgh is my hometown, and this is my first marathon and it will be a great opportunity to reconnect with my family."

Deichler is a 1995 graduate of Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Penn., and obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1999.
