Commander Chris Tarsa
Commanding Officer
USS Newport News (SSN 750)


Cmdr. Tarsa is a native of Adams, Mass. and a 1995 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Systems Engineering.  Following commissioning, he completed nuclear power training in Orlando, Florida and Ballston Spa, New York.   Commander Tarsa’s first shipboard assignment was USS MINNEAPOLIS-SAINT PAUL (SSN 708) where he served as Chemistry Radiological Assistant, Damage Control Assistant and then Assistant Engineer Officer from October 1996 to June 2000 while deploying twice to the Mediterranean and once to the North Atlantic.  Following his first sea tour he was assigned to Naval  Nuclear Propulsion Training Unit at Ballston Spa, New York where he served a Shift Engineer Officer and the Production Training Officer at from June 2000 to June 2002.  During his Department Head tour, he served as the Combat Systems Officer and then Engineer Officer onboard USS ALBANY (SSN 753) from May 2003 to December 2006.  During his tour he deployed to the Central Command and Southern Command areas of responsibility.  After completing his tour, he transferred to the Staff of Commander Fleet Forces Command as a Junior Board Member of the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board from December 2006 to June 2008.  Commander Tarsa served his Executive Officer onboard USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734) from October 2008 to December 2010.  During his tour, TENNESSEE conducted a homeport shift from King’s Bay, Georgia to Norfolk, Virginia to conduct a 27 month Engineered Refueling Overhaul.  He then reported to Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic as the Deputy Director for Strategic Weapons, Nuclear Policy and Force Protection where he served until December 2012.  Commander Tarsa is authorized to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal,  Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and various other medals and  ribbons.
