Cmdr. Brian Tanaka
CDR Brian Tanaka is a native of Rochester, MN and a 1996 graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry.
Following commissioning through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) and completion of the nuclear propulsion training pipeline, he reported for his division officer assignment onboard USS MEMPHIS (SSN 691) in Groton, CT. While onboard the ship completed a Northern Atlantic deployment.
Following the Submarine Officers Advanced Course he was assigned as Navigation/Operations officer onboard USS JEFFERSON CITY (SSN 759). During this tour the ship completed a Depot Modernization Period (DMP), homeport shift to San Diego, CA and a Western Pacific Deployment. His Executive Officer assignment was onboard USS WEST VIRGINIA (SSBN 736) (BLUE) where he completed two strategic deterrent patrols.
Ashore CDR Tanaka has served as Flag Lieutenant to Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Submarine Warfare Division, Assistant Nuclear and Submarine Officer Community Manager in the office of the Chief of Naval Personnel and most recently as Deputy Director, Navy Liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives, in the Navy’s Office of Legislative Affairs. He also holds a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Catholic University of America and is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Seminar XXI program in International Affairs and Foreign Policy.
CDR Tanaka’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. He is most proud of the campaign, unit and service awards earned as a result of excellent team work and unit efficiency.
