Commander Steve Wilkinson enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1982. His initial sea assignments include USS Josephus Daniels (CG-27), USS England (CG-22) and USS Sacramento (AOE-1). Initial shore assignments include the U.S. Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland serving both the Navy and Air Force communities and assignment to the Trident Refit Facility, Kings Bay, Ga. for initial outfitting.

In 1990, Wilkinson was selected to participate in the Enlisted Commissioning Program where he attended the University of Idaho, graduating with a Bachelor of Schience degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Submarine sea assignments include USS Alabama (SSBN 731) Blue, USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) and USS San Francisco (SSN 711).

Shore assignments include Commander Submarine Deveopment Squadron Twelve Tactical Analysis Group as the Torpedo and Counter-measures Project Officer, Deputy Chief of Staff for Material and Logistics for Commander Submarine Group Seven and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) where he developed, maintained and executed NATO's Military Training and Exercise Program.

In June 2006, Wilkinson received his Masters of Art in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. While attending the Naval War College, he was selected to participate as one of two U.S. Navy Officers to represent the United States at the Naval Staff College Class of 2006.

Wilkinson's personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with four gold stars, and Navy Achievement Medal with two gold stars.
