Cmdr. Shawn Huey enlisted in the Navy in 1990.  After recruit training, he attended Machinist’s Mate “A” School, Nuclear Power School, and Nuclear Prototype Training (A1W).  After qualification at prototype, he was selected to participate in the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program.  After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in August 1995, he received his commission at Officer Candidate School in December 1995.

 His first sea assignment was USS Parche (SSN 683) from May 1997 through January 2000.  During this tour, he served as FT/TM, CRA, RCA and SONAR Officer and completed three deployments.  Following his Division Officer tour, he served as a Junior Officer Detailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Millington, Tenn., from February 2000 through June 2002.

Cmdr. Huey served as Engineer Officer on board USS Portsmouth (SSN 707) from December 2002 to July 2005.  During his tour, Portsmouth completed a Western Pacific deployment and a change of home port to Norfolk, VA where the ship conducted an Inactivation Availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.  Following his tour on Portsmouth, Cmdr. Huey served as the Squadron Material Officer at COMSUBRON 6 from July 2005 to June 2007.

Cmdr. Huey served as Executive Officer on board USS Alabama (SSBN 731) from September 2007 through November 2009.  During his tour, he served as the combined crew XO to complete the Engineering Refueling Overhaul, the Gold Crew Officer in Charge prior to crew split, and XO of the Gold Crew patrol.  Following his executive officer tour, he served as the Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic Nuclear Power Officer from December 2009 through June 2012.

Cmdr. Huey’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (with one gold star), Navy Commendation Medal (with four gold stars), and the Navy Achievement Medal (with four gold stars).
