Senior Chief Sonar Technician (Submarines) Dwight Newton

STSCS (SS) Dwight Newton was born in Charleston, SC, and joined the Navy on March 1992 where he attended Recruit Training Command, Chicago, Illinois. He attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School, Basic Electronic Rate Training and SONAR “A” at Naval Submarine School, Groton, CT with a follow on assignment to USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765) in Norfolk, VA June 1993. USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765) was in Newport News Shipyard. USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765) completed her work-ups before her maiden deployment in April 1995.

In October 1995, he went to Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT to attend SONAR “C” school.  He was promoted to STS2 in 1996 and reported to the USS PHILADELPHIA (SSN 690) in January 1997.  On USS PHILADELPHIA (SSN 690), he served as WCS and lead technician for the AN/BQQ5E sonar system.  He made two arduous North Atlantic deployments where he was selected as Sailor of the Quarter for 4th Quarter and was Command Advanced to PO1.

Senior Chief Newton returned to Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT in October 2000 as an instructor and a member of the CONOPS group for future Sonar system development. He conducted numerous Pre-deployment trainings and advance training to the fleet in Tactical Oceanography and Sonar Concepts. 

In January 2005, he reported to the USS MEMPHIS (SSN 691) as the Leading Petty Officer and Command Financial Specialist.  He completed two arduous 6 month deployments to the Mediterranean, Northern Atlantic and Western Pacific.  In September 2007 he was selected for Chief Petty Officer.

He continued his LCPO tour at sea onboard USS SAN JUAN (SSN 751) and later became the Weapons Department Leading Chief. He deployed to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean for six-month deployment before returning to Groton, CT and a homeport change to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He reported to COMUBLANT as the SONAR Evaluator for the Tactical Readiness Evaluating Team in May 2011 where he was also selected to Senior Chief Petty Officer.

Senior Chief Newton left COMSUBLANT to attend Senior Enlisted Academy and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course in Newport, RI, from July to October 2013.  Upon completing these courses, Senior Chief Newton reported on board USS ALBANY (SSN 753), home ported in Norfolk, VA., in October 2013 where he relieved as Chief of the Boat

Senior Chief Newton wears the Navy Commendation Medal (3 awards) , Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards) and other personal, campaign and unit awards.
